Dorian Gray

Ács János-Várkonyi Mátyás

“The soul is a terrible reality”, wrote the famous British author Oscar Wilde in his cult novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). The quip is proven by the story of the eponymous hero of the book: a wealthy, attractive and naive young man, who so desperately desires to stay young and beautiful that he would even sell his soul to achieve this. And so it happens, exactly as he wished; his dissolute and wastefully extravagant life does not leave any imprint on his face. But it does leave terrible traces on a carefully hidden portrait of him painted during his youth. In 1990, the composer Mátyás Várkonyi, writer-director János Ács and Gunar Braunke produced a dramatic musical version from this highly spiritual story that seems to cry out for stage adaptation. The new play, stacked with wild passion and steeped in rampant sensuality, was performed, among other locations, in Germany and in the UK. The play was performed again twenty-eight years after its premiere in the Kálmán Imre Theatre of the Budapest Operetta Theatre directed by Attila Réthly who had been a student of the lyricist János Ács while studying to be a director at the University of Theatre and Film Arts of Budapest.
